Martial Arts

Martial arts are traditional combat practices thought to first originate in Asia and India. These codified fighting systems have been used for centuries in self-defence, military actions, law enforcement and competition. Typically, they have both physical, mental and spiritual components, and are often closely tied to a nation’s cultural heritage. In China, martial arts originated during the Xia Dynasty, more than 4000 years ago. According to legend, it was the Yellow Emperor, a famous general and deity, who introduced this early system of battle techniques. They have since developed into many different styles, usually called by the umbrella terms; gongfu, guoshu, wushu.

Apart from being a popular form of exercise, marital arts are an intrinsic element of Chinese culture with influence in literature, opera, movies and art.

East Asian martial arts differ slightly from other marital arts through the influence of Daoism and Zen Buddhism. The practitioners’ mental and spiritual state is of great importance.
